WILL MY HEALTH INSURANCE COVER NUTRITION SERVICES WITH A REGISTERED DIETITIAN?
Currently, I am in network with Aetna, Cigna, Medical Mutual, Ohio Medicare, and UnitedHealthcare. It is always recommended to check with your insurance carrier regarding nutrition counseling coverage.
Here is a general summary of what each insurance carrier typically covers for nutrition:
Requires a physician’s order
Covers 26 nutrition visits per year for Diabetes, hypertension, overweight, obesity, and hyperlipidemia.
Additional diagnoses can be covered under preventative care
Covers up to 3 visits per year for Adults and children age 6 and older for obesity, BMI 30 or greater.
Cardiovascular risk factors, family history of diabetes, and personal history of gestational diabetes
Covers 9 preventative care nutrition visits yearly under the Affordable Care Act.
Ohio Medicare Part B
Covers Diabetes and pre-dialysis Chronic Kidney Disease only.
A physician referral is always required (must be signed by an MD or DO), and a new one is needed yearly.
Covers overweight, obesity for adults and children age 6 and older, Hypertension, Pre-diabetes in adults age 35-70, Impaired fasting glucose, Diabetes, Metabolic Syndrome, Dyslipidemia, Atherosclerosis, and Pregnancy.
In cases where Lindsey Fausnaugh RD, LD is not part of your insurance company's provider network, you will be provided with a "super bill" containing all necessary billing codes and information for you to personally submit to your insurance company. Often insurance companies will provide individuals with at least partial (out of network) reimbursement when a "super bill" is submitted. It varies greatly between plans, so it is always recommended to check with your insurance company and/or your employee benefits officer to be sure of your coverage. See my recommendations for checking your insurance benefits.
WHAT METHODS OF PAYMENT DO YOU TAKE?
I accept cash, checks, debit cards, Visa, American Express, Mastercard, HSA (Health Savings Accounts, and FSA (Flexible Spending Accounts).
WHAT IS A TYPICAL SESSION LIKE?
A typical session ranges from about 1 to 1 1/2 hours for a new client. You will be asked a series of questions to complete a health assessment. These questions will include medical history, eating, sleeping, stress and exercise habits, medications/supplements, family history, etc. Then we will discuss your goals and discuss food in terms of what to eat and how much to eat. The session will conclude with forming a Plan of Care. The Plan of Care is an action plan listing out your goals and what you agree that you can and need to do to achieve your goals. Each session is different because every person is different.
Most clients attend nutrition appointments on an on-going basis for motivation and encouragement. In the beginning it is typical for clients to attend appointments on a weekly basis. As time goes on appointments gradually become less frequent (biweekly, monthly) and once goals are met they may only check in a few times per year.
WHAT IS MEDICAL NUTRITION THERAPY?
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is a therapeutic approach to treating medical conditions and their associated symptoms via diet therapy. MNT can increase a patient's health and well-being, and increase productivity and satisfaction levels through decreased doctor visits, hospitalizations and reduced prescription drug use.
Most insurance plans cover nutrition visits with a registered dietitian. I highly recommend that you call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask specific questions to verify insurance coverage. Click the button to view my list of recommended questions for insurance verification.
